Episode 6 – Hannibal, Missouri: America’s Hometown

Hannibal, MO is the boyhood home of Mark Twain and setting for Twain’s classic tales of the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn. Down & Dirty Travel had the pleasure of touring the city in style as Cindy Lovell, The Executive Director of the Mark Twain House and Museum, took us on the Mark Twain Riverboat, inside the Mark Twain Caves, his boyhood home, and the museum. This episode includes excerpts from the double-CD Mark Twain Words and Music, which features Clint Eastwood, Garrison Keilor, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, and tons of other stars. We also have a video on Hannibal so you can see for yourself how quaint and picturesque “America’s Hometown” actually is.

Episode 5 – Camping part 2: Cool Vintage Trailers and Ol’ Yosemite

Vintage Airstream trailers are definitely a great way to camp Down & Dirty. In this episode we discuss The Shady Dell trailer park in Arizona and also Hicksville trailer palace in Southern California. Go check ‘em out and have your pick of some really rad old trailers decorated to make you feel as comfy and cozy as possible while still technically “camping.” You can see pictures of both trailer parks in our photos section. Moving right along to the grandaddy of all camping experiences, we tell you all the things we loved about Yosemite National Park. The great thing about Yosemite is whether you like to really rough it or prefer the convenience of a hotel, Yosemite offers it all (As long as you don’t mind bears and we ain’t talkin’ the West Hollywood kind).

Episode 4 – San Francisco!

Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square, trolley cars, blah, blah, blah.  San Francisco is famous for a lot of stuff you’ve heard of and maybe seen for yourself but that doesn’t mean we can’t offer some down and dirty recommendations on our favorite places. The Musee de Mecanique is a creepy blast from the past where we like to waste hours and hours ogling old-timey dancing girls through a viewfinder and obviously, we’re going to tell you about all our favorite bars, especially the one we consider to be the grandaddy of all tiki bars, The Tonga Room.  And for those visiting San Francisco internationally, its important to understand the vast differences between northern and southern California, just so you don’t offend a hippie by asking them where you can find a Sephora.

Episode 3 – California Campin’

The cleanliness of a campground’s bathroom is usually directly proportionate to how lenient they are with their booze rules. In this episode, we share campground entertainment tips to catch the eye of your campground neighbors and we disclose a few tales of our usual lushbag debauchery from past camping trips. We’ve camped on California’s beaches, rivers, deserts, and mountains so here’s just a few sites we recommend for your next down and dirty camping adventure.

Episode 2 – Memphis is for Music Lovers

Listen up, record collectors and rock-n-roll nerds! You’re gonna want to hear what our special guest, Scott Bomar, has to say. He’s a Memphis-based musician, Emmy Award winning film composer, Grammy nominated music producer, and member of the Bo-Keys, a Memphis soul/funk/rhythm & blues band that combine young hotshot players with veterans of Stax/Volt and Hi Records.  If you love to travel and love music, why not take a trip to see your favorite bands? With the help of Scott and our buddy, writer/comedian, Kevin Kataoka, we get the “Down & Dirty” scoop on the Ponderosa Stomp festival in New Orleans and Gonerfest in Memphis. We only wish we could present this episode to you on vinyl!

Episode 1 – Viva Las Vegas

You don’t need tattoos or a Bettie Page haircut to enjoy the annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend (But it helps).  The festival is an alternative to the usual Vegas experience and offers “Down & Dirty” fun for anyone who’s into music, guitars, drinkin’, hot rods, vintage culture, kitsch, and people-watchin’.  In this episode, Tamra and Jenny dish about drunken debauchery from Viva’s past, they interview their moms about what they liked at Viva, and you’ll hear a clip from the ’09 classic car show.  Our first episode kicks off with a 1950′s bang!
